Directed Study
A Directed Study is a course format, which allows students to study independently while under the supervision of a faculty member. It is designed to serve the need of students to take graduate courses at their convenience, on their schedule, with the option to work with the faculty instructor to customize the course content toward ministry objectives. Students can register at any time, and once registered a directed study is a 24-week course, two weeks less than six months.

Frequently Asked Questions about Directed Studies
When can I apply?
How do I apply?
- Download a Directed Study Approval Form. Complete the top student section, and return the form to the Office Administrator in the Theological Seminary office on Smith 3 or fax the form to 312-329-4344.
- Each directed study requires instructor approval. It is helpful to contact the instructor you would like to enroll in a directed study with before handing in your application; however, it is not required.
- After receiving your form, the Office Administrator will contact the professor you requested and, if approved, you will receive an email containing a copy of your completed approval form, and an approval letter with further instructions on course payment and coursework due date. Academic Records will be notified of your approval, your directed study should appear on your schedule, and on your bill once the registration is completed.
- Please Contact the Office Administrator if you have any questions (312-329-8035). God bless you in your graduate studies and ministry!
How many directed studies can I take?
- Graduate students can take directed studies up to the number of credits allowed within their degree program.
- Certificate program students are allowed up to three credits
- Master of Arts students are allowed up to six credits
- Master of Divinity students are allowed up to nine credits.
What is the tuition rate for a directed study?
- The tuition rate for a directed study course is the same as the tuition rate for a semester course.
Can all graduate courses be taken in the directed study format?
- Most all graduate courses can be taken as a directed study with a few notable exceptions. As a general rule, biblical-language courses (Techniques in Greek & Hebrew Exegesis) are not offered in the directed study format as these courses are difficult to learn without the required classroom interaction. Also, typically it is the preference of the instructors of counseling courses, preaching courses, and Interpersonal Relationships that students take them within an in-person format (semester or modular course), retaining their intrinsic community dynamic.
What other policies apply to directed studies?
- Students cannot take a directed study for any course, which they failed in another course format (e.g. semester, online, modular.)
- Any academic holds must be cleared before taking a directed study through the appropriate department (e.g. Health Service, Treasury Operations, etc.)
- Directed Studies may be applied for at any point in the school year—unless otherwise noted, each directed study will begin upon instructor’s and dean’s approval. If you wish for your directed study to correspond to an academic semester, please have directed study application forms returned to the Graduate School by August 1 (Fall) and December 20 (Spring).
